Whether you are just freshening up a wall area in your home or painting the wall and ceilings in multiple bedrooms, using a quality paint roller is a must. To achieve professional painting results, you need to use professional painting tools. At Pro Roller Company, we are your source for a variety of paint rollers for smooth finish results on walls and ceilings. Our selection includes both paint brushes and rollers for various paint project needs.

For Smooth Walls

The type of cover you use on your roller, along with its thickness (referred to as the nap) determines the smoothness of the paint applied to the wall. If you are painting on a standard smooth wall, you can achieve an ultra-fine finish using a white woven short nap.

Synthetic fiber roller sleeves are ideal for applying gloss and other oil-based paints and for painting flush doors and other flat surfaces. Use a 1/2-inch nap on smooth ceilings, walls, cabinetry, and other non-textured surfaces – for example, metal.

For Textured Walls

When painting walls with uneven, textured surfaces, and Artex ceilings, a long-haired mohair roller sleeve is ideal. It is important to switch to a nap length that matches the surface you are painting.

  • If the surface is lightly textured, use a 3/8-inch nap.

  • If the surface is moderately textured, painted concrete or brick, or paneling, use a 1/2-inch nap.

  • If the surfaces are heavily textured, such as popcorn-textured walls, concrete, or bare brick, use a 3/4-inch nap.

  • If the surface is rough brick, cinderblocks, or painting stucco, use a 1-inch nap.

1/2 Inch Nap vs 3/8 Inch

When choosing between whether to use a 1/2-inch nap or a 3/8-inch nap, there are multiple factors to consider. A 3/8 nap is sufficient if the surface has no texture or a simple roll-on texture. However, if the wall is textured with concrete or plaster, using a 1/2-inch nap or greater as necessary will ensure you apply for the proper paint coverage.

For Ceilings

When painting ceilings, a 3/8 inch is often ideal along with the use of a telescoping pole, preferably a shorter one combined with the use of a ladder that allows you to position yourself closer to the ceiling.
